Fire Regulations and Residential Community Housing – Christchurch Consultation Forum

Recently the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) released a proposed draft design guide for providers to determine fire safety requirements in community residential housing. The draft design guide is available on the MBIE website (click here). The submission deadline is September 11th.

      Description

      The intent of the design guide is to move away from a “one size fits all” approach (which has the potential for significant cost) to an approach where fire safety requirements are based on the actual support needs of the people living in the home. While the design guide has been developed in close consultation with a number of key stakeholder groups there is still some concern about the final draft. For this reason NZDSN, in conjunction with DPA and Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) will be hosting a series of forums to both highlight the issues and to seek your feedback.

      We are particularly concerned about the potential scope of the design guide reaching well beyond Community Housing to include any dwelling where people are receiving Ministry funded support services. We are also interested to know whether you think the document has the right balance between design requirements and management practices.

      We will be gathering feedback from the forums as part of a joint submission. You can also make your own submission directly through the MBIE website link (above).

      The details of the forums are as follows:

      • Auckland: Monday 21 August at 10.30-12.30  Onehunga Bowling Club,  146 Selwyn Street, Onehunga.  Plenty of parking on site and can cater for over 100 people. 
      • Wellington: Thursday 24 August at 10.30-12.30 Century City Tower Level 4/173 Victoria St, Te Aro, Wellington 6011
      • Christchurch: Monday 28 August at 10.30-12. Fendalton Library Boardroom, corner of Clyde Rd and Jeffreys Rd, Christchurch.  Note: entrance is off Jeffreys Rd and ask at the counter
