Loren Savage, Senior Engagement Advisor from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care, will provide an introduction to the Inquiry:

An extended and interactive workshop presentation from Sue Hobbs (People First NZ and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care) and Erika Butters from the Personal Advocacy and Safeguarding Adults Trust (PASAT). Both are members of the Safeguarding Alliance.

- The spectrum of safeguards needed to effectively respond, including supported decision making
- Basic human rights to consent and decision making
- Factors that increase vulnerability
- Who is at risk and identifying the need for safeguarding support
- How legislation affects your safeguarding responsibilities
- The different types of abuse experienced by disabled people
- The SAFA multi-agency, multi-disciplinary approach for safeguarding people at risk of experiencing abuse and neglect

Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care
Loren is one of the Royal Commission’s senior engagement advisors who has worked across government, and the disability sector. Loren works to create internal processes for the Royal Commission, as well as promoting the work of the Inquiry throughout the disability sector ensure disabled people and their whānau are able to engage with the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care in a way that is appropriate and accessible to them.
Erika Butters

The Personal Advocacy and Safeguarding Adults Trust (PASAT)
Erika works as the Director of Advocacy with The Personal Advocacy and Safeguarding Adults Trust. She is passionate that the rights, well-being and interests of all New Zealanders are protected and promoted. Over the last several years her work has focused on ensuring independent advocacy is available to all disabled people in New Zealand. Erika works and lives in Wellington.
Sue Hobbs
Safeguarding Adults National Director
The Personal Advocacy and Safeguarding Adults Trust (PASAT)
Sue is a former Police Officer from the UK and is currently employed by People First NZ and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in State Care. Sue has been working in the field of family violence, sexual violence and safeguarding adults for over 30 years. She led the co-design of the Safeguarding Adults from Abuse (SAFA) pilot in partnership with Waitemata District Health Board and the Waitemata Police in 2016 and has been advocating for the need for Safeguarding Adults Framework in New Zealand for the past 12 years.
