AI and the disability sector

Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving quickly, and many NZDSN members and their residents and clients are already using AI to support and enable good lives.

AI’s potential to remove barriers, support choice, and increase participation is exciting, but of course, must be used with consideration for privacy, data security, bias, transparency and accessibility.

NZDSN convenes a special interest group for members to share knowledge and discuss the use of AI and other assistive technology in our sector. If you would like to join the discussion, please fill out the form here: NZDSN special interest groups – Fill out form

My Life My Voice, with support from the Workforce Futures Fund, has recently developed an AI use policy template that is free for any organisation to use.

The template is designed to help organisations:

  • Put people and human oversight first
  • Protect sensitive client and organisational data
  • Be transparent about when and how AI is used
  • Ensure AI tools enhance, rather than undermine, accessibility and equity

Organisations are welcome to use the policy as-is, adapt it for their own context, or seek support from My Life My Voice to tailor it.

The only request is that providers let My Life My Voice know if they plan to use it, and share any feedback to help strengthen the resource over time.

Form filling

My Life My Voice has also developed guidance on how to use AI to help write submissions. While this is tailored for writing submissions, you can easily take the content and apply it to funding applications and anything else that requires form filling.

You can watch the video here (YouTube video 5:56).
