A set of audio-visual resources have been released as a learning resource to help develop people’s awareness and understanding of the Enabling Good Lives principles.  There are 12 video clips.  11 of these feature the stories of disabled people and families who share their journeys in pursuit of a good life – their successes and challenges.  One video clip features a group of sector leaders discussing the background to the development of the Enabling Good Lives movement and how its founding principles can inform our thinking about effective support for disabled people and families.  There is a summary of the Enabling Good Lives principles below and a link for further information.

These video resources have been developed as part of a Workforce Development Collaboration project that involved four initiatives aimed at improving sector qualifications, organisational leadership opportunities and the availability of learning resources.  The project was managed by The New Zealand Disability Support Network in partnership with the Ministry of Disabled People – Whaikaha and the National Enabling Good Lives Leadership Group with funding support from the Ministry of Disabled People, Ministry of Social Development and Careerforce.  For more information about the Workforce Collaboration Project – https://nzdsn.org.nz/our-work/.

These video clips are primarily intended to be used as a learning resource to support the orientation and induction of new support staff and as a training resource for those organisations delivering relevant sector qualifications.  However, they will also provide valuable insights for those in organisation leadership roles, those in policy and system design roles and for disabled people and families keen to explore different futures.

We urge you to view video clip “EGL Hui” first which provides background about the Enabling Good Lives Principles from a group of sector leaders.  Once you have viewed further video clips, we urge you to open the link to a series of reflective questions to assist your learning journey.

The reflective questions have been developed to encourage a variety of viewing audiences to think about what they have seen and heard in each video clip and to consider how this might alter their future thinking and actions.  Those in training roles are encouraged to use these questions to facilitate learning and to support curriculum development.

The Enabling Good Lives Principles are:

Self-determination

Disabled people are in control of their lives.

Beginning early

Invest early in families and whānau to support them; to be aspirational for their disabled child; to build community and natural supports; and to support disabled children to become independent, rather than waiting for a crisis before support is available.

Person-centred

Disabled people have supports that are tailored to their individual needs and goals, and that take a whole life approach rather than being split across programmes.

Ordinary life outcomes

Disabled people are supported to live an everyday life in everyday places; and are regarded as citizens with opportunities for learning, employment, having a home and family, and social participation – like others at similar stages of life.

Mainstream first

Disabled people are supported to access mainstream services before specialist disability services.

Mana enhancing

The abilities and contributions of disabled people and their families are recognised and respected.

Easy to use

Disabled people have supports that are simple to use and flexible.

Relationship building

Supports build and strengthen relationships between disabled people, their whānau and community.
